Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. It is the centre of politics, economy, education, culture, and transportation. Bangkok is located in the central part of the country on the low-flat plain of the Chao Phraya River, which is the most important river that can be compared to the main artery of the nation.
The city was established in 1782 as the new capital of Thailand by King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty on a flood plain delta of the Chao Phraya River. The location was then selected with consideration as a natural defense from enemies and the richness of water for inhabitants. Since its establishment, the city grew steadily in size and importance which at first covered only 4.14 square kilometers to now, a mega-city that comprises of 50 districts with total area of over 1565 square kilometers. Bangkok is the 22nd most populous city in the world. Although Bangkok now has roughly 7 million registered inhabitants, the actual population is much higher, and including commuters from the surrounding areas, may reach an estimated 10-15 million people during the day time, making the city one of the most densely populated in the world.
Bangkok is the commercial center of Thailand, as well as Southeast Asia, for imports and exports. Bangkok is considered to be one of the world's top tourist hotspots and is currently Asia's top tourist destination. The city boasts some of the country's most visited historical venues such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, various monuments and shopping malls. There are numerous projects to maintain Bangkok's historic sites such as the Rattanakosin area and river districts. An estimated 15 million foreigners arrive in Bangkok every year and many are lured back for a second visit due to the cheap cost of living and the quality of services provided.
